Claude Code pricing: why there is no seat price
Budget Claude Code by consumption, not by headcount. A light user inside a subscription costs close to zero on top of the plan; a heavy user running long agent sessions is effectively buying tokens at API rates. The tier that covers one engineer will not cover five.
The two billing paths
Path one is a Claude subscription: a flat monthly fee with usage limits. Path two is metered API usage, where every input and output token is billed at the published rate.
The practical difference is who absorbs the variance. With a subscription, a runaway agent session hits a limit; with metered usage, it hits an invoice.
What drives the bill
Context size dominates in this category. An agent that reads a dozen files before answering pays for those files on every turn, so a repo-wide task can cost an order of magnitude more than a single-file edit.
Session length matters as much as model choice. Teams are usually surprised by the number of turns, not the per-token price.
Three team shapes
Solo developer, a few sessions a day: a subscription is almost always cheaper and simpler than metering.
Five-person team, mixed workloads: metered usage with a monthly cap gives you visibility, but expect the heaviest user to consume most of it. Cap at the tool level, not just in billing.
Regulated environment: the cost that matters is the review time, not the tokens. If every command needs approval, a metered agent is the wrong shape regardless of price.

FAQ
Is there a free tier?
There is no free tier for Claude Code itself. Access comes through a paid subscription or metered API usage; the free Claude plans do not include sustained agent use.
Can I cap spending?
At the provider level you can set usage limits on API keys, which is the reliable way to bound a runaway agent. Subscription plans have their own usage limits rather than a spending cap.
Why is it more expensive than a $20 seat tool?
Because it is metered rather than subsidised by a fixed seat. A fixed seat price is a bet by the vendor that average usage stays low; metering removes that bet and passes the variance to you.
