ALTERNATIVES
GitHub Copilot alternatives: what you gain by leaving
If you leave Copilot for agent capability, go to Cursor or Windsurf and accept moving the team's editor. If you leave for auditability, go to Cline or Continue. If you leave because code cannot leave the network, the answer is Tabnine or Tabby — nothing else in this list solves that.
What Copilot is actually good at
Completion inside the IDE you already use, on a per-seat bill that procurement already approved. That combination is hard to beat and most teams that leave come back, because the alternatives require either a new editor or a new billing conversation.
The honest reason to leave is capability: Copilot's agent features are newer and more conservative than Cursor's or Windsurf's, and its model routing is less flexible.
Three destinations, three problems
Agent platforms (Cursor, Windsurf) solve capability but move the whole team into one editor. Open-source clients (Cline, Continue) solve auditability but push model cost and configuration onto you. Self-hosted tools (Tabnine, Tabby) solve network egress but usually give you less capability.
The migration nobody budgets for
Copilot's stickiness is organisational, not technical: SSO, seat provisioning, content exclusion policies and an audit trail that security already signed off on. Rebuilding that on a different vendor takes longer than the engineers expect.
For a team under ten people, none of this matters and switching is an afternoon. Above that, treat it as a procurement project, not a tool swap.

FAQ
Is there a free Copilot alternative?
Several clients are free and open source — Cline, Continue, Tabby — but all of them need a model. Either you pay an API provider or you run something locally, so the software being free does not make the workflow free.
Can I keep Copilot and add an agent?
Yes, and plenty of people do: Copilot for inline completion, a separate agent for multi-file work. The cost is two subscriptions and two places where code leaves your machine.
