ALTERNATIVES

Cline alternatives, and what you give up by leaving

The short answer

Leaving Cline is rarely about capability. It is about where the agent lives and who owns the data boundary: a terminal tool (Aider, Claude Code), a more configurable fork (Roo Code), or a self-hosted cloud agent for teams (Roomote).

Why people actually leave

Three reasons come up repeatedly. First, you want the agent in a terminal rather than an editor sidebar. Second, your team needs a shared, always-on setup instead of one person's laptop. Third, the bill surprised you — Cline itself is free, but it passes model costs through at list price with no ceiling.

None of these are defects. They are mismatches between the tool's shape and the shape of your work, which is why the right replacement depends entirely on which one applies to you.

The four replacements

The table below is generated from the same records as every tool page, so licence and permission fields stay consistent. Two of these are forks or siblings of Cline, which matters more than it sounds: a fork inherits the approval model you already understand.

What changes when you switch

Going to Aider or Claude Code removes the editor integration entirely. You lose inline diffs and gain a git history where every change is a commit — for some teams that is a strict upgrade, for others it is a downgrade in review ergonomics.

Going to Roomote moves the agent off your laptop and onto infrastructure you run. That is the only option here that changes the data boundary rather than the interface, which is why it costs money above ten users.

Staying inside the Cline lineage (Roo Code) is the lowest-risk move: same key handling, same approval prompts, more knobs.

FAQ

Is Cline really free?

The client is free and Apache-2.0 licensed. The model calls are not: you either pay a provider directly with your own key or buy a bundled subscription. For a heavy user the token bill dominates the cost of every tool in this category.

Does Cline send my code to a server?

Your code goes wherever your chosen model runs. With a hosted provider that means the provider's API; with a local model it never leaves the machine. That choice, not the client, is the actual data boundary.

Can I run Cline fully offline?

Only if the model runs locally too — point it at a local server such as Ollama or LM Studio. The extension itself does not require a login, but a hosted model means network egress by definition.
